The PlayStation 4 virtual reality headset, known as the PSVR, is now out in the wild. In fact, it’s been out since November 2017, but Sony hasn’t really done much to promote it. However, there are some good reasons why the PSVR isn’t getting a lot of attention.
- First off, the hardware itself is pretty expensive. A single unit costs $399, while the base model of the Oculus Rift CV1 costs just $400. And while the Vive Pro costs about $500, it doesn’t include headphones, meaning you’ll still have to shell out another $200 for those.
- Second, the software side of things is lacking compared to what you’re used to seeing on PC. There aren’t many games to play. Sure, there are plenty of demos, but nothing that’s worth buying. And even though the PSVR does support SteamVR, it’s missing quite a few features like gamepad support and controller tracking.
- Finally, there simply isn’t a whole lot of content to watch. While there are a handful of movies and TV shows available for purchase, most of them don’t look very good. They tend to use cheap graphics and low resolution textures, making everything feel flat and lifeless.
